Autumn 2 week 3

This week, we looked at different blogs from across the school.  We discussed what made the blogs effective, and we discussed about having parent/carer permission before children can go on the blog. This will keep the children safe.

E-safety rules continued...

This week, we started by reading 'Digiduck's Big Decision'.

http://www.childnet.com/ufiles/DigiDuck-eBook.pdf.

We have learned that it is important for us to be kind in real life, and when online.  We retrieved our class rules from the server, and we added on some rules to show what we have learned today.

E safety rules.

This week, we continued to find out more about e-safety.  As a class, we agreed on some rules that would keep us safe.  After this, we used Microsoft Word to publish them. We saved our files so that we could come back to them leader.

Welcome, Class Bramble.

Today, we looked at our new blog for this academic year.  We discussed what a blog is used for, and spoke about staying safe when we are online.  We completed a questionnaire all about esafety.

E-Safety posters

Today, we returned to our work from last week. We retrieved our saved file and and began to organise and present our ideas in different ways so that we could attract more people to read our rules. We used the keyboards to add more text in, delete anything which was unnecessary or repeated and changed the colour and style of the font to create a more attractive poster.

Once we had completed this, we felt our posters needed more so we added in images to draw attention to it.

Have a look at the selection of photos below.

Presenting our Esafety rules

This week, we continued to find out more about e-safety.

We started by reading Digiduck's big decision http://www.childnet.com/ufiles/DigiDuck-eBook.pdf

From this story, we learned that you must always be kind in real life and on the internet.

Next, we went on to the computers to add our new rules to our posters.

First we had to find and open our document.

Then we added our new rules. Once we had finished we changed the size and colour of our text. Hananya said this is to make it more attractive.

To make sure we could find it again we then saved it.

Agreeing E-Safety rules

Today, we recapped what we knew about E-Safety and agreed our classroom rules. Once we had agreed them we used Microsoft word to type them up. We then saved our files so that we could come back to it next week. Here is Lola-Rose's rules

Welcome Class Thistle

Today we discovered our new year group blog. We first thought about what the internet was by watching this video and then talked about what we might use a blog for.

We looked back at last year's posts so that we can see all the fun things that await us in year 2.

We then thought that we could ask questions on our blog and ask people to reply.

So, we would like to know what you use the internet for? Parents please answer in the comment section.

Using the internet to find out information

Miss Smiles asked us a question today ... 'What is the internet?'

We watched a video and found out that the internet is not a real place but somewhere you can share information and talk to people anywhere in the world.

We like to use the internet to play games, look for funny pictures, watch videos, read stories and find facts.

But... the internet isn't always for kids. If you find something you don't want to see you can tell an adult and they will help you.

So, we used a kid friendly search engine and searched for answers to the questions we had written in our books about the Olympics.

Next week we will use the information to make a poster.

Harry said that some of our searches didn't come up as we wanted them to. Now we know that if this happens we have to look at our question and see if we can add words in or take words out.

Libby said that the answers just weren't popping up! She found out that you had to read the information to find the answer she wanted!

Leo discovered that other people have put the information on the internet for us and it hasn't just got there by magic. This means that it might not always be true!

Learning to debug

Today we practised debugging. We opened 2 challenges on beebot. Miss Smiles had tried to program the beebot to get all the way around the track however she had made a few mistakes. Our job was to go into the algorithm and fix the mistakes. Here is a video of Layla debugging beebot...

Holi - the Hindu festival of colours

Today we learnt about Holi which is a Hindu festival of colours. It celebrates the legend of Holika and Prahlad. What happened in this story?
Hindus celebrate Holi by having bonfires to burn last year's rubbish so they can make new beginnings.
They also have processions and dancing.
In many parts of the world people throw coloured water or paint over each other to celebrate.

We used poster paint in bottles to make our Holi pictures on paper.
Can you find out anything else about Holi?

Programming software to carry out a task

Today Miss smiles gave us a challenge. We had to get bee-bot to spell our names.

We opened our bee-bot mat and had to write the code to make sure that our bee-bot moved to the correct letters in the correct order.

If we managed to do it we then had to try and do it in less commands.

We had to get up, out of our seats in order to figure out the left and right moves.

Some of us came across a few problems. See our videos below.

Some more extra homework

Today, Lexie shared with us some poetry she had been inspired to write at home. She has thought about the different seasons, the sounds she might here and the things she might do. We think it's great!
Well done Lexie!

Let's go fly a kite ...

This afternoon we made kites from straws, tissue paper and masking tape. We added a crepe paper streamer tail and some wool so we could fly it. We had great fun especially when we tested them in the playground.

Tomorrow we will be writing kite poems - what words could we use to describe a kite flying?

Orienteering in the playground

Today we used a map to find clues in the playground. We worked in groups of 3 and had to find squares with letters on. We recorded our letters on paper by the number of the clue. Once we had found all the letters, we tried to write a word with the highest score. Can you remember the word with the highest score?

Kite making

This afternoon we made our own kites. We used tissue paper, straws, string and masking tape. Once we had made them, we flew them outside and thought all the different words to describe how they move.

These are the ideas we came up with:
Swaying like long grass
Wiggling like a snake
Dancing softly
Twirling slowly
Twisting quickly
Bobbing slowly up and down like people in the water.

Tomorrow, we will use some of these ideas to write our own poems,

Orienteering

Today, we went orienteering. First of all we were given a map so and had to identify different parts of the school grounds. We found the school, the field, the playground and the reception area. When we looked at the map we noticed there was different numbers written all over it. We discovered that these numbers where the places we needed to find and we were looking for letters. To help us, we were given clues.

After this we had to explore the school grounds to try and collect all 15 letters.

After half an hour, we had to use the letters to make the highest scoring words that we could make.

The longest word that we made was dolphins and it scored 63 points!

Tomorrow we will be making our own orienteering maps and tested Bramble class.

Extra home learning!

All this week, we have been learning outside of the classroom. We have been exploring the outdoors whilst learning, rehearsing and performing poems. Last night, at home, Niamh felt inspired to write her own poetry about the outdoors.

Have a look and see what you think. We think it is great!

Bramble recycling fun

Today we took part in some games about recycling.
Do you know what should go in the different recycling bins?
Red is for ... ?
Green is for ... ?
Black is for ... ?
Small brown is for ...?
Large brown is for ...?

We had bean bags with pictures of different things to be recycled to post in the correct colour bin.
Did you get all the pictures correct?

Recycle relay

This afternoon we played a game called recycle relay. We had beanbags that had pictures on of stuff and we had to put them in the right bins. The green bin is for cardboard, the big brown bin is for garden  waste, the red bin is for plastic, the black bin is for glass and the small brown bin is for food waste. The team that put the most correct items in the right bins won the game!

Team building

Today, we took part in some team building activities. Alex said we had to use team work. Emmanuel said we had to listen to other people's ideas. Libby said we learnt how to work together. Ethan said we had to listen carefully and communicate clearly. Shudhit said it was really important to encourage others.
