Some more extra homework

Today, Lexie shared with us some poetry she had been inspired to write at home. She has thought about the different seasons, the sounds she might here and the things she might do. We think it's great!
Well done Lexie!

Let's go fly a kite ...

This afternoon we made kites from straws, tissue paper and masking tape. We added a crepe paper streamer tail and some wool so we could fly it. We had great fun especially when we tested them in the playground.

Tomorrow we will be writing kite poems - what words could we use to describe a kite flying?

Orienteering in the playground

Today we used a map to find clues in the playground. We worked in groups of 3 and had to find squares with letters on. We recorded our letters on paper by the number of the clue. Once we had found all the letters, we tried to write a word with the highest score. Can you remember the word with the highest score?

Kite making

This afternoon we made our own kites. We used tissue paper, straws, string and masking tape. Once we had made them, we flew them outside and thought all the different words to describe how they move.

These are the ideas we came up with:
Swaying like long grass
Wiggling like a snake
Dancing softly
Twirling slowly
Twisting quickly
Bobbing slowly up and down like people in the water.

Tomorrow, we will use some of these ideas to write our own poems,

Orienteering

Today, we went orienteering. First of all we were given a map so and had to identify different parts of the school grounds. We found the school, the field, the playground and the reception area. When we looked at the map we noticed there was different numbers written all over it. We discovered that these numbers where the places we needed to find and we were looking for letters. To help us, we were given clues.

After this we had to explore the school grounds to try and collect all 15 letters.

After half an hour, we had to use the letters to make the highest scoring words that we could make.

The longest word that we made was dolphins and it scored 63 points!

Tomorrow we will be making our own orienteering maps and tested Bramble class.

Extra home learning!

All this week, we have been learning outside of the classroom. We have been exploring the outdoors whilst learning, rehearsing and performing poems. Last night, at home, Niamh felt inspired to write her own poetry about the outdoors.

Have a look and see what you think. We think it is great!

Bramble recycling fun

Today we took part in some games about recycling.
Do you know what should go in the different recycling bins?
Red is for ... ?
Green is for ... ?
Black is for ... ?
Small brown is for ...?
Large brown is for ...?

We had bean bags with pictures of different things to be recycled to post in the correct colour bin.
Did you get all the pictures correct?

Recycle relay

This afternoon we played a game called recycle relay. We had beanbags that had pictures on of stuff and we had to put them in the right bins. The green bin is for cardboard, the big brown bin is for garden  waste, the red bin is for plastic, the black bin is for glass and the small brown bin is for food waste. The team that put the most correct items in the right bins won the game!

Team building

Today, we took part in some team building activities. Alex said we had to use team work. Emmanuel said we had to listen to other people's ideas. Libby said we learnt how to work together. Ethan said we had to listen carefully and communicate clearly. Shudhit said it was really important to encourage others.

Map making - using technology

We have been learning how technology can help us outside in the community. One of the ways it can help us is with maps.

As we have been learning about Bexleyheath this half term, we planned a route from our school to the high street. The we used the directions Google maps gave us to draw our own maps.

SPAGHETTI TOWERS

Our final challenge for today was spaghetti towers.

We were given spaghetti and marshmallows and told to build the biggest tower that we could.

Here is a conversation Liam had with his group.

Shall we start by making a square base with marshmallows in each corner? They will stick it together. Then do marshmallows and spaghetti all the way up.

On Friday, we will try this challenge again but using what went well this time and improving on what went wrong. Hopefully our structures in Friday will with stand the 10 second test!

We did get to eat the marshmallows though.

Spring poems

We read the poem called 'Ice'
Then we got into groups of 6 and we performed them.
After this, we went outside to get ideas for our own Spring poems.
We came back inside and wrote our poems.
When they were finished, we acted them out to the rest of the class.

Egg Rocket

Yesterday, we continued our Outdoor Week by designing, creating, making and evaluating a rocket for an egg.
Our brief was to design a rocket to keep an egg safe when it was dropped from the top of our playground equipment.
We worked in groups and used everyday objects to design our rockets. Some of us were successful, some of us weren't.
After we had launched them, and saw our results, we discussed in our groups what we would do differently next time.

Claudia said she would change the position of her parachute to stop the egg falling out.
Harry explained that he would build a bigger cushion to stop the egg falling.
Luke said he would re-think the whole design! He said it was a disaster!

Worming

To kick start outdoor week, we learned all about worming. We created our own womeries using a plastic bottle, some sand, some soil and some grass. Then we spent time digging for the worms that will live in the wormer ices for the next 2 weeks before we put them back in the wild. Who
St we have them in the classroom we are going to check on them every day to see how the worms behave.
To share our learning we then wrote instructions on how to make your own womeries.

We can't wait to see what the worms do!

Learning about algorithms and debugging

Today we learned that in order to get our bee it to move on the screen we needed to write a series of instructions called algorithms.

So that we understood how clear we had to be we first went out into the playground and gave each other instructions to move around. Sometimes we gave the wrong instructions and ended up in the wrong place. When this happened we had to go back to the beginning and start again.

After this we tried to get our bee bots to move on screen by giving very clear instructions. We wrote our algorithms, checked them and debugged them if necessary.

Below are some videos and pictures to show what we did.

Answering questions about our data

Next, Miss Smiles asked us questions about our data.

Year 3 group have used the blog to share their answers

Which continent had the most votes?
Europe

Which continent had the least votes?
3 of them do. Africa, Australia and Asia.

How many votes did South America get?
7

Presenting our data

Next, we put our data into bar chars using graphed.

Layla said this would make it easier to see than reading a tally chart because you have to count that.

Here is a copy of our year 5 group

Collecting our data

So, we visited classrooms and collected our data. We asked the classes which continent they would like to to live on.

We explained they couldn't pick Antartica as you could only visit there not live.

Some of us had to go back and record our answers again as we missed some of the votes when using the iPad to record our findings
